Employees waiting for the government to complete the processing of replacement Green Cards got some good news this month. On Sept. 10, 2024, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) began automatically extending the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. Before this change, only a 24-month extension of the validity of a Green Card had been provided.
The replacement process has been experiencing several delays in recent months. Many lawful permanent residents waiting on Green Card replacement reported concerns that their extension time would run out before the process was complete. Under the new extension, residents who have correctly filed Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card should receive the new extension.
If needed, employers can confirm the extension by reviewing the updated Form I-90 receipt notices. The agency has updated the language on Form I-90 receipt notices to extend the validity of a Green Card for 36 months from the expiration date on the face of the current Green Card for individuals with a newly filed Form I-90 renewal request.
