Reconsidering Candidates with Work History Gaps

Is your company overlooking good job candidates based on unexamined assumptions about gaps in the candidate’s work history? The federal government thinks many employers are missing out on good candidates, and many good candidates are missing out on a chance to succeed.

The Society for Human Resources Management reports that in 2019 a national resume service conducted a field experiment where they applied to more than 36,000 job openings across major online job boards using fictitious applicants. Their findings were that employees with job history gaps carry a stigma in the recruitment process. Applicants with work history gaps had a 45 percent lower chance of getting an interview than applicants without work history gaps.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) want to change this. They are hosting a virtual roundtable entitled Untapped Potential: Reimagining Equity for Workers with Gaps in Employment History to discuss challenges workers face when reentering the workforce after periods of unemployment. The roundtable is part of a multi-year joint effort by the agencies to boost diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in hiring and recruitment practices.

Speakers will highlight the barriers that caregivers, older workers, people with long-term disabilities, and formerly incarcerated individuals face when reentering the workforce, the strengths these workers offer to employers, and promising practices to attract this untapped talent.
