Several States Pass Employment Law Changes

Many commentators are predicting sweeping changes in federal employment laws and regulations due to the results of the November 5th election. What the changes will be won’t be known for months. Changes in some state employment laws, however, are known. Alaska, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Nebraska are among the states making changes to their employment laws:

Alaska:

  • The state minimum wage will increase to $15.00 per hour by July 1, 2027.
  • Employees can accrue up to fifty-six hours of paid sick leave per year if their employer has fifteen or more employees.
  • The state joins nine other states in prohibiting ‘captive audience’ meetings on specific topics.

Massachusetts: Rideshare drivers will be able join unions and collectively bargain for wages and other terms of employment.

Missouri:

  • The state minimum wage will increase to $15.00 per hour by 2026.
  • Employees can accrue up to fifty-six hours of paid sick leave per year if their employer has fifteen or more employees. In May 2025, employees will begin to accrue one hour of paid sick time for every thirty hours worked.

Nebraska: Employers with at least twenty employees must provide up to seven days or fifty-six hours of earned paid sick leave. Employees will start accruing paid sick leave on October 1, 2025.
